Parents of a 9 hour old boy who was born premature and died have been convicted of manslaughter. They will likely only be sentenced to 18 months in prison and have a $250k fine. The boy was born in his grandparents’ home and would have had a “99%” chance of survival had he been brought to a hospital. Instead, the parents prayed and “anointed” the child with oil. The Followers of Christ over in Clackamas are a cult. Luckily, this change in the law was made:
In response to deaths among Followers of Christ members, state lawmakers this year removed the religious defenses from criminal laws. Those exemptions had made it tougher to convict parents who shun a child’s medical care for religious reasons than those who shun it for other reasons like neglect.
Sabonis, age 46, is recovering in a Lithuanian hospital following a heart attack he suffered during a pick up game of basketball in his hometown of Kaunas on Tuesday. Doctors say he is recovering just fine. If you recall Sabonis was inducted into the Naismith HOF and the FIBA HOF in the past few years; not to mention a Trailblazer figurehead.
Kobe is strongly considering an offer from Italian ball club Virtus Bologna for 10 games over 40 days for $2.5 mil. Kobe grew up in Italy for a period of time and learned the fundamentals of basketball there. He says it would be a dream for him to return to his “home” and play the game he loves.
Women can now vote and run for local council in Saudi Arabia. While this is a big step forward, they still can’t drive or leave the country unescorted. But big ups for King Abdullah for pushing for political reforms such as this. However, the only general elections in the country are for half the seats in local municipal councils. The other half are appointed by the “Islamic Absolute Monarchy” government. Doesn’t sound fair to me…
Good article to read about the atrocious graduation rate of Portland Public Schools (65% on average). The district has plans to assist minorities in graduating and has some statistics from Franklin High School where the program has already been in place for some time. FHS is showing that if you have some initiative and an idea, you can actually DO something to HELP YOUR COMMUNITY. Something that impacts the everyday man, I like it.
26 pieces of the satellite are to breach through the atmosphere sometime tonight or tomorrow. It will probably land somewhere in the ocean, but this is an uncontrolled reentry and decommission of a satellite so anywhere is technically fair game. However, NASA has predicted that if it doesn’t land in the ocean, it could wind up stateside. Chances of you being struck by any of the debris? 1 in 22 trillion.
While Troy Davis’ death sentence is under appeal, Laurence Brewer was put to death this evening in Texas. Brewer and 2 others were arrested and charged with the murder of James Byrd Jr. in 1998. The 3 white supremacists found Byrd (an African-American) on a late night on a back-country road where they got into a fight. They overpowered Byrd and chained him to the back of their truck and dragged him for some 3 miles along a bumpy asphalt road. They dumped the dismembered remains near a cemetery. Wasn’t capital punishment warranted here?
…the bloody mess found after daybreak was thought at first to be animal road kill. Rowles, a former Texas state trooper who had taken office as sheriff the previous year, believed it was a hit-and-run fatality but evidence didn’t match up with someone caught beneath a vehicle. Body parts were scattered and the blood trail began with footprints at what appeared to be the scene of a scuffle…
